Arrive in the Mile High City and transfer to your hotel.
On our first morning together, we’ll enjoy a city tour of Denver before travelling to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Learn about the rodeo and railroad capital of the Old West, which became the epicenter of westward rail expansion when the Union Pacific line extended to Cheyenne in 1867. Enjoy a leisurely evening—perhaps stop at the Cheyenne Depot Plaza and Museum.
En route to South Dakota stop at the Fort Laramie Historic Site, along the Oregon Trail where you will get an insight into the battles fought during the westward expansion and how the soldiers lived during that time.
After your fist night in Rapid City you’ll also enjoy a scenic drive through the Black Hills, with sightseeing stops at Mount Rushmore National Monument and Crazy Horse Memorial, and two incredible, awe inspiring, stone carvings in the rock formations of the Dakotas.
Immerse yourself in Wild West history; we’ll begin with a morning stop in the frontier town of Deadwood, where “Calamity Jane” once lived and “Wild Bill” Hickok played his last game of cards.
Then, stop at the nearby “Tatanka: Story of the Bison” interpretive center, built by Oscar-winning actor Kevin Costner, to learn about the Northern Plains peoples, and the buffalo they relied on to survive. Continue West to Devil’s Tower National Monument famous from the movie “Close Encounters of the third Kind” and end the day in the Sheridan area.
The short drive this morning affords you ample time to visit the Buffalo Bill Center of the West to learn more about this American icon, as well as the art and history of the Plains Indian tribes. Explore this quaint Western town tonight on your own and perhaps visit the local Cody Nite Rodeo that is happening nightly during the summer season (Rodeo optional and at extra charge only June-August)
This morning, continue early on to nearby Yellowstone, the United States first National Park. See spectacular geysers, lakes, and mountains during your visits here today and tomorrow morning! Have your camera ready for likely sightings of buffalo, elk, moose, gray wolves, or bears. Take in the tranquility of Hayden Valley and the vibrant colors of the geysers— Yellowstone is a feast for the eyes!
Pay a morning visit to Old Faithful, Yellowstone’s most famous geyser whose 20 daily eruptions attract many of the park’s 4 million annual visitors. Continue south to Grand Teton to enjoy a spectacular landscape rich with majestic mountains, pristine lakes, and wildlife. Overnight in Jackson Hole, one of the quaintest, yet upscale, mountain resort towns in the west.
After a leisurely morning in Jackson Hole, we’ll travel to Utah’s grand capital for an easy-going 2-day stay on the 14 day itinerary or a one night stay followed by transfer to the airport for the 10 day itinerary.
This beautiful city played host to the 2002 winter Olympics, and you can still enjoy many of the sites designed to make the city welcoming. Salt Lake City has the hospitable feel of a friendly mountain town, and is full of stunning parks, wonderful restaurants, and opportunities to shop, enjoy art, or take in live theatre and music.
On the 14 day tour a day excursion to the Bonneville Salt Flats and the Great Salt Lake is on the program. The largest Salt Water Lake in the Western Hemisphere still, has created the Salt Flats through the ages that are now home to most of the world’s land speed records. A barren, flat scenery that makes it hard to believe that it was once covered by water. If luck will have it, someone may attempt a speed record right in front of your eyes and you may witness history in the making.
10 day duration ends after one night in Salt Lake City on Day 10
Second to China, the state of Utah is the area in the world where the most Dinosaur species are discovered and even today, scientists continue to find thousands of rare fossils and bones here. Tonight’s overnight city, Vernal, is also know as “Dinosaurland“. The city is home to the largest quarry of prehistoric Jurassic dinosaur bones and offers spectacular mountain vistas and sunsets.
This morning, visit Dinosaur National Monument, an astounding experience for laymen and experts alike! Visit the Quarry Exhibit Hall which allows visitors to view the wall of approximately 1,500 dinosaur bones in a newly designed space. Here, you can gaze upon the remains of numerous different species of dinosaurs including Allosaurus, Apatosaurus, Camarasaurus, Diplodicus, and Stegosaurus along with several others. Exhibits, including an 80-foot long mural, reveal the story of these animals and many others that lived here during the late Jurassic. There are even several places where you can touch real 149 million year old dinosaur fossils!
Then it will be time to leave Utah and head back to Colorado by way of the spectacular Rocky Mountains. Overnight in one of the most breathtaking mountain resorts, Steamboat Springs.
This tour truly saves the best for last: the Rocky Mountain National Park! We will take Trail Ridge Road, also known as “Highway to the Sky,” with stops at exhilarating vistas before we descend again to Denver for our last night.
(Trail Ridge Road commonly open only June- October)
After your last night in Denver it is time to return home with memories abound from your travels through the seemingly endless Wild West. We hope you enjoyed your stay and will consider exploring more of this great country with G2 Travel.
